FAQ - 💬

❓ Do I have to put my 1099-SA on my taxes?

👉 Am I required to report information contained on Form 1099-SA on my federal income tax return? Yes. Distributions from HSAs are generally reportable on IRS Form 1040 and Form 8889.

❓ What does a 1099-SA show you?

👉 A 1099-SA is a U.S. tax form that reports distributions made from a health savings account (HSA), Archer medical savings account (Archer MSA), or Medicare Advantage medical savings account (MA MSA). Its purpose is to show you (and the Internal Revenue Service) how much money you spent from your account.

❓ Why didnt ti get a 1099-SA this year?

👉 IMPORTANT: You WON'T get the 1099-SA form if you DIDN'T withdraw funds from your HSA in the previous year. The 5498-SA form is typically delivered the month after the tax filing deadline, allowing any contributions made in the current year for the prior year to be included.

❓ Who does 1099-SA come from?

👉 The financial institution that manages the account is responsible for sending you a copy of Form 1099-SA.

❓ What happens if I don't file my 1099-SA?

👉 They will send you a letter and proposed additional taxes, penalties, and interest. If any of the payments/purchases you made with your debit card were not for qualified medical expenses then those amounts are taxable and subject to a 10% penalty.

❓ What happens if you don't claim HSA on taxes?

👉 In addition to the 20 percent penalty, the IRS will also consider any HSA funds spent on non-qualified expenses as taxable income. This means they must be included as part of your total income when filing your taxes, which could increase the amount you owe or reduce any refund to which you may be entitled.

❓ Do I have to pay taxes on my HSA distributions?

👉 Distributions from an HSA that are used to pay qualified medical expenses aren't taxed. An Archer MSA may receive contributions from an eligible individual and his or her employer, but not both in the same year. Contributions by the individual are deductible whether or not the individual itemizes deductions.

❓ What happens if you dont report 1099 SA?

👉 They will send you a letter and proposed additional taxes, penalties, and interest. If any of the payments/purchases you made with your debit card were not for qualified medical expenses then those amounts are taxable and subject to a 10% penalty.

❓ Can I access my 1099 SA online?

👉 If you've misplaced it or if it never made it to your mailbox, you can easily access your SSA-1099 form online. DO NOT contact us to request a copy of your Form SSA-1099. Use the instructions provided below to get a copy or contact Social Security at 800-772-1213.

❓ Who is the payer on 1099-SA?

👉 Form 1099-SA will list the financial institution or the insurance company that holds the account as a payer.

❓ Do you have to file your HSA account on taxes?

👉 When filing your taxes, you are required to file IRS Form 8889 if you (or someone on your behalf, including your employer) made contributions to your HSA, or if you received HSA distributions for the year.
